May Momentum
Karen standing next to our crew’s current favorite bed on the farm. We planted a bed of half mixed snapdragons and half dianthus, and then a lot of nigella volunteered. It ended up being a magical microcosm of color and texture.
Greetings!
We’re still soaking up Wednesday’s rain, but early in the week our crew made a big push to finish up the vast majority of the high priority field work. Seedlings were planted, beds were staked and netted, and weeds were weeded. What a relief to have it all knocked out. Next week we’ll be able to focus on seeding our annual stand of Ray’s Crazy Summer Mix, a farm favorite cover crop blend, and perhaps we’ll tackle even more weeding.
Things in the fields are still moving along slowly, but I’m hoping the blooms will pick up the pace with sunnier, warmer days in the forecast. We’ve got larkspur, cosmos, strawflower, and yarrow on the harvest horizon. June is coming and summer is near!
With the weather warming up, we’ll have to prepare our high tunnels for the hot days ahead. Our spring tunnel crops are sensitive to heat which means that we have to use shade cloth on the tunnels to prevent them from getting too hot and stressed out. The shade cloth keeps things a bit cooler in the tunnels and allows our plants to keep pumping out stems for a few more weeks than they would otherwise. We’re always trying to extend our seasons, and these sweet spring crops are extra desirable.
Each spring we’re graced with the abundant presence of baby birds and, less appealing to us farmers (but adorable nonetheless) baby rabbits. This week two different bird nests hatched, and we’ve been treated to brief glances of hungry babies waiting for snacks. We’ve also been watching many young rabbits run around, snacking on our plants. They’re cute, but they sure are frustrating!

We’ll also have bouquets and bunches of snapdragons, peonies, foxglove, and poppies—and maybe more!
