Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Maintenance Season

We’ve seen quite a few monarchs recently, and this week began to spot eggs and newly hatched caterpillars!

Greetings, farm friends!

It’s safe to say that we’re beginning to adapt to the heat, and appreciating every break we get. Our slow season is in full swing, so we’ve had a lot of time to focus on field work. All of the rain we’ve had this summer has certainly helped the weeds grow. We spent the vast majority of this week tackling weed and it’s starting to look like we’ve got things under control. One of the nice things about farming at our small scale is that when things begin to get out of hand in the field it generally doesn’t take too long to right the ship.

We’ve been planting out fall crops each time there’s a break in the heat. Thursday’s weather was perfect for planting, and it looks like we’re in for another round of cooler, overcast days next week. Last year we really struggled with planting in July. When we planted into landscape fabric, the extreme heat ended up burning our seedlings, and we lost a great number of plants to this problem. We stopped planting into landscape fabric during hot spells, which solved that problem, but heat stress remains a struggle for young seedlings. So far this year, the summer planted seedlings seem to be holding up pretty well despite the heat. As long as we can keep the rabbits from eating them and the weeds from taking over, it looks like we’ll have a bountiful autumn!
