Back at it!
Greetings!
Spring has arrived, and, despite the gloomy weather, flowers are blooming and the farm is brimming with life. Our 2022 crew started full time this week and we’ve already managed to accomplish so much work! We transplanted out the first field plantings of the season, spent time potting up plants in the greenhouse, weeded a significant portion of the farm, and finished a laundry list of assorted tasks that had piled up during the winter months. It feels good to be back in the groove, and it’s great to have more people around to accomplish the mountains of spring tasks that are rapidly accumulating!
Tulips are here! We’ve got another week or two of high tunnel tulips rolling in, and then our field tulips should be ready to harvest. The cold weather gave us a late start to the season. High tunnel tulips are generally the first flower ready for us at Two Boots, followed very shortly by daffodils.
This week we sent out the first florist deliveries of the season!
We’re happy to be back to supplying our designers with immaculate blooms, and look forward to the season ahead. If you’re a designer interested in receiving our availability list and purchasing from us this year, please reach out! Wedding season has begun, and we love working with florists to supply the freshest flowers possible.
In the coming weeks we’ll be harvesting tulips, ranunculus, peonies, delphinium, hellebores, anemones, butterfly ranunculus, and so much more!
If you’ve been thinking about placing a seedling order from our online plant sale do so soon! We’ll be taking down the shop at the end of the month so that we can pack orders and take the remaining plants to markets. In addition to a wide variety of veggie and herb seedlings, we offer an abundance of specialty cut flower seedlings that can be difficult for home gardeners to source.
If you prefer to wait to purchase plants in person, there will be several shopping opportunities that I will announce here in the coming weeks.
The greenhouse is absolutely packed with seedlings this year, and we’re busy as can be getting them all potted up and ready for your gardens. Everything looks quite healthy, and we’re very pleased with how things are coming along!
Love flowers but not interested in growing them yourself? In search of an indulgent gift for a dear friend or loved one? 2022 Flower CSA shares are still available!
Our Spring share will begin in a couple of weeks, and this year we’re also offering Summer, Fall, Full Season, and Dahlia shares!
CSA share pickup is available on-farm, at Motzi Bread in Baltimore, and on a porch in D.C.
Our CSA shares feature a selection of the best flowers we have to offer, and we do our best to make sure that every week the bouquets are unique and exciting.
That’s about all I’ve got in the way of updates for now, but be on the lookout for much more in the coming weeks! I’m back on the weekly newsletter schedule and we’ve got plenty to share with our readers.
Wishing you well,
Amelia and the rest of the Two Boots crew.
Our high tunnels look great this Spring! Everything is verdant and disease free at this point, which is always a relief. Overwintering flowers in high tunnels can be tricky, as the crops need a lot of ventilation to remain disease free. This requires maintaining vigilance about opening the sides of the tunnels daily when the weather is above freezing and removing row cover during the day. In years past, we’ve failed to be as vigilant about this as we should, but this year we were, and the hard work paid off! As long as the sun decides to come out at some point in the near future, we should be set for a great spring!
