Field Work, Finally!
Greetings!
After many cold spells, a lot of rain, and a few incredibly hectic weeks, we’ve finally managed to catch up on field work this week. We planted many rows of sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, amaranth, and so much more. Soon we’ll have abundant summer blooms, but for now we anxiously await the arrival of the remainder of our spring crops, those glorious overwintered flowers we love so much. This week saw the arrival of the first stems of snapdragons, orlaya, and wonderfully fragrant sweet peas. We’re on peony watch this week; coral charm is the first variety ready each year, and it should bloom any day now.
Field planting! We planted most of this field on Monday, and we hope to see it in full bloom in a couple of months. This field was cover cropped for the entire 2021 season, and so we are hopeful that it has benefited immensely from that fallow period and will give us great crops! The fallow season meant that we weren’t really paying attention to weeds that grew amongst the cover crop, and we know that many went to seed in the field during that time. We’ve tried to limit our use of landscape fabric in recent years (an effort both to be less reliant on plastics and utilize the open space around plants to experiment with undersowing cover crops), but in situations in which we know crops will be in the ground for a long time and may face extensive weed pressure, we appreciate the barrier.
Seedling sale orders went out the door this week, which takes a massive weight off our shoulders. The seedling sale is a massive undertaking for us—we love doing it, but there are a lot of logistics involved and it can get quite complicated at times! We do our best to keep everything straight, but when working with living plants some things are beyond human control.
For the past two months, the greenhouse has been absolutely overflowing with seedlings, and now that the vast majority of things have been planted in our own fields or delivered to our seedling sale customers, it’s nearly empty!

Last call for seedlings!
This Saturday, May 14th is our on farm plant sale. We’ll be there rain or shine!
We’ll have the remainder of our seedlings available for purchase, along with some seedlings from our friends Good Dog Farm.
Bouquets will also be available for purchase.
It’s time to get your summer crops in the ground! It looks like the threat of frost is beyond us, and the weather is perfect for planting.

We’re back at the JFX market on Sunday from 7:00-12:00.
This week’s market stand will feature bouquets, peony bunches, vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings, radishes, and turnips.
That’s all for this week.
Wishing you well,
Amelia and the rest of the Two Boots crew
First snapdragons of the season
This high tunnel is on the verge of erupting in colorful blooms.
We know the ranunculus season will come to a close soon, but for now we’re savoring every bloom.
