Pawpaw Season in Upon Us!
Greetings, friends!
We’ve got another week under our belts, and the days seem to be flying by. It’s hard to believe that in just over a month we’ll be tidying up the farm for winter! Little signs of the impending seasonal change are everywhere— on Tuesday I seeded the last round of lettuces for the year, we switched over the cover crop we’re seeding from oats to rye and clover (oats winter-kill, so they need to get established earlier than rye), and we’re gearing up to transplant overwintered flowers! Though autumn and winter aren’t too far off, what we’re really gearing up for right now is the pawpaw harvest. We expect to begin harvesting the earliest fruits over the weekend, things should pick up in earnest over the course of the next week.
Pawpaws, soon to come!
For the uninitiated, I like to describe pawpaws as having flavor that’s like a cross between a mango and a banana, with a custard texture. Pawpaws are native to North America, with a range from southern Louisiana all the way up to Ontario. The trees are beautiful, with a slender trunk and long, large leaves. The trees are pollinated by flies and beetles, and are the host plant to the beautiful zebra swallowtail butterfly. The flavor of pawpaws can be polarizing, but we find that many of our customers return year after year to get their hands on this ephemeral treat!
We’ll be popping up at several D.C. area farmers’ markets in September, and we’ll have pawpaws available at the JFX market throughout September, as well as a sales option for on-farm pickup.

We’re back at the JFX market on Sunday from 7:00-12:00.
This week’s market stand will feature bouquets, bunches of celosia, dahlias, eucalyptus, millet, and sunflowers. The produce selection will feature edible flowers, spring mix, shishitos, and basil.
The flowers are stunning right now, and summer produce is rolling in! Stop by your local farmers market this week and pay a visit to your farmers.

October marigolds and eucalyptus in our high tunnel. Right now it’s uncovered, but we’ll reskin it in early October.
It was an absolute foliage frenzy this week!
