April Showers
Greetings!
We’ve had quite a dreary week here at Two Boots, which has meant a lot of time spent in the greenhouse while waiting for the fields to dry out. With the unpredictable weather we’ve experienced lately, it’s been difficult to get the fields ready for crops to go in the ground, which means we’ve got thousands of seedlings on standby, waiting for their time to shine. Of course, April showers bring May flowers, and we’re going to get these seedlings planted as soon as we possibly can! The cold, gloomy weather has given us the time to work on potting up seedlings for our plant sales, which is a massive task and something we’re usually struggling to stay on top of this time of year. This year, I think we’re in pretty good shape, which comes as a huge relief.
All of the trays sitting outside of our greenhouse are seedlings ready to be planted. We’ve got our work cut out for us!
On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to do one last pruning run through our pawpaw orchard. We pruned the orchard once in early March, but after consulting with our pawpaw mentor, Jim Davis, we realized that we could be pruning our trees a lot harder than we have in the past! Our trees were showing signs of stress from being weighed down with too much fruit on tiny branches, so we needed to prune to encourage growth in areas that could bear more weight. After an afternoon in the trees, we’re feeling much better about the state of the orchard, and we look forward to seeing how the effects of this year’s pruning play out! We expect that our rigorous pruning may lead to slightly less fruit than we’ve had in the past, but the fruit should be of good size and quality.
Seedlings galore! We’ve potted up thousands of seedlings in the past two weeks.
We’re shutting down our online plant sale on April 25th at 7:00 am! If you’ve been thinking about placing a seedling order from our online shop do so this weekend. We still have a wonderful selection of plants available.
If you’d rather shop in person, you’ll have several opportunities to do so in the coming weeks!
This year will be our first time vending at Flower Mart! Flower Mart is April 29th & 30th in Baltimore. We’ll be selling seedlings and cut flowers, and on April 30th, Elisa & I will lead a lecture on how to grow your own cut flower garden!
The following week, we’re participating in Cylburn Arboretum’s Market Day on May 7th, and their ticketed Party on the Porch event the night before.
We’re looking forward to a busy market season, and we can’t wait to see your faces!
We’ll have our first bouquets of the season this weekend, alongside plenty of other floral goods.
We’re back at the JFX market, and we’re thrilled to be there! The market is on Sunday from 7:00-12:00.
This week’s market stand will feature tulip bunches, mason jar arrangements, bouquets, and vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings.
If you aren’t a farmers market lover but still want to get a hold of our blooms, 2022 Flower CSA shares are still available!
Our Spring share will begins next week, and this year we’re also offering Summer, Fall, Full Season, and Dahlia shares!
CSA share pickup is available on-farm, at Motzi Bread in Baltimore, and on a porch in D.C.
Last but not least, there are still a few tickets remaining for our June 18th Farm Dinner with Helena del Pesco, of Larder. Tickets are flying, so by the time this email reaches your inbox, there’s a chance they will be sold out!
We look forward to seeing you at the market!
Wishing you well,
Amelia and the rest of the Two Boots crew.
The pawpaws are blooming. We love these unique flowers!
We had a huge hellebore order this week; we harvested nearly all of the year’s hellebore’s in one fell swoop! We’re going to have to plant more of these beauties.
