2026 Plant Sale Favorite Varieties
Greetings friends!
Spring appears to be taking its time this year but the plants in our greenhouse are staying cozy. This week we were supposed to direct seed some flowers outside but the weather was not cooperating. Next week it will start feeling like spring and we will be able to accomplish some field tasks like seeding and weeding our overwintered flowers.
I wanted to highlight some favorite plant sale varieties for 2026:
Strawberries - AC Valley Sunset
We planted a bed of strawberries on our farm two years ago just as a spring snack for our crew. There’s nothing better than getting a handful of strawberries each day. The great thing about strawberries is they continue making more plants year to year. Last year we potted them up for you and they were so popular we sold out three times!
Marigold, Tangerine Gem
This adorable flower is shorter than 12 inches tall and smells like citrus! I love to rub my fingers along it each time I walk past just to get a sniff. On our farm we use it as a cut flower and it’s also edible. Additionally, it brings beneficial bugs to your garden, who once established will enjoy eating pests such as thrips and aphids. Each year, when I put my beneficial insect order in with IPM Labs, the entomologist, Liz, always reminds me to plant this crop all over the farm as a habitat for beneficial bugs.
Milkweed Hairy Balls
This plant is very popular with our Flower Mart customers who love the name. When they see what the hairy balls plant looks like mature, they giggle up a storm! In addition to being the funny looking plant, it is also a habitat for monarch butterflies. There is some discrepancy that this milkweed doesn’t mature at the correct time for the monarchs in Maryland since it originated in Southern Africa. However, we have found that monarchs love them and sometimes prefer this variety to the other native varieties of milkweed.
Sungold Cherry tomatoes
In my opinion these are the best tasting tomatoes. They are sweet at the front but have a well balanced tartness. The plants are incredibly prolific and disease resistant. We grow these on our farm to snack on them between harvesting flowers and planting crops. Tomatoes are prone to splitting so it’s best to harvest them frequently, especially if rain is on the horizon. You can harvest them just as they are starting to turn orange and they will continue to ripen inside on the counter.
Our plant sale is open. Get your orders in early for the best selection!
